Important Notice
Due to the continued spread of the Covid-19 virus, and the need for us all to take measures to look after our entire community, we are postponing the FDW currently scheduled for April 27 – May 1, 2020 at SFU. We are hoping to be able to re-schedule it in August 2020. Please watch this site for further information in late April/early May.
If you have already registered for the FDW, we will keep your registration on file, and contact you about the new dates when they are confirmed. If you have not yet registered but are interested in participating in an FDW in August, please contact our Events Coordinator to let her know, and again, we will contact you.
Who should attend
The ISW Program provides new and experienced instructors with a laboratory approach for teaching improvement combining skills enhancement and personal renewal. The Facilitator Development Workshop (FDW) is designed primarily for individuals who will be conducting the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW) at an institution. Individuals must have participated in an ISW prior to applying for the FDW. Depending on when you completed your ISW, there will be different types of prepatory work that we will ask you to complete prior to the FDW. Details will be provided when you register.
The FDW provides individuals with an opportunity for professional development in a challenging and supportive atmosphere and provides connections to a larger instructional development network. Participants need to register through their Institutional ISW Contact Person (contact Janice Johnson (janice.johnson@ufv.ca) if there is no ISW Contact Person at your institution).
What you will learn
ISW activities form the nucleus of the FDW. ISW participants refine teaching techniques through the lessons and, with guided practice and feedback, develop strategies for facilitating the group process central to the ISW method. As with the ISW, the FDW is a peer-based model providing participants with a small group setting in which to work on facilitation skills. The small groups meet in plenary sessions each day featuring such themes as: diverse learners, collaborative learning, and feedback models.
Who are the trainers
Facilitators/Trainers in the ISW Network will serve as members of the training team. The number of small groups will depend on the number of registrants and the availability of ISW trainers. Early registration is requested so that we can confirm the training team.
