What Is Mine to Do? Reclaiming Agency as a Local Representative

Facilitators: Kelley Cranford (Mohawk College) & Alison Dunn (Mohawk College)
In today’s current institutional climate, many Local Representatives are navigating uncertainty, limited resources, and shifting priorities, all while still being asked to sustain the integrity of the Instructional Skills Workshop (ISW). This 90-minute interactive session invites Local Reps to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what is within their control to preserve ISW values and goals.
Grounded in the guiding question, “What is mine to do as a Local Representative?”, participants will explore how to sustain ISW with clarity, purpose, and care, even in challenging contexts. Through structured reflection, peer dialogue, and practical strategy-sharing, this session will support Local Reps in identifying realistic actions they can take now, while learning from what is working across different regions and institutions.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
  • Identify aspects of the Local Rep role that are within their influence and control
  • Apply practical strategies for sustaining ISW in under-resourced or uncertain contexts
  • Examine strategies to strengthen messaging about the value of ISW amid shifting institutional priorities
  • Explore practices that support participant commitment and program continuity

Session Topics

  • Maintaining the integrity of ISW in environments with limited resources
  • Addressing cancellations and sustaining participant commitment
  • Communicating the value of ISW in changing institutional contexts
  • Sharing regionally grounded strategies that are working “on the ground”
